The multidisciplinary Research Group on Law, Science, Technology & Society (LSTS) of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) was created in 2003 as an independent entity within the Faculty of Law & Criminology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. With more than 30 researchers at all levels of experience, LSTS has become a prominent European research institute in the area of technology regulation.

The  Research Group Crime and Society (CRiS) was founded in 2012 and and studies the developments in society focusing on our constructivist, critical, comparative and interdisciplinary approach to crime and crime control as social phenomena.

Project Partner

Prof. Dr Serge Gutwirth is full Professor at VUB’s Faculty of Law and Criminology and he leads LSTS. Gutwirth has been vice-chair of the VUB’s research council from 2002 to 2013 and member of its executive board from 1999 to 2013, and is currently vice-dean for research in the Faculty of Law and Criminology.

Project Participant

Prof. Dr Gloria González Fuster is a research professor at VUB where she investigates legal issues related to fundamental rights, privacy, personal data protection and security, and lectures on fundamental rights protection in European Union (EU) law in the context of the Master of Laws in International and European Law (PILC).

Project Participant

Prof. Dr Jenneke Christiaens is full professor at the VUB’s Faculty of Law and Criminology, and a member of the Criminology Department. She is chair of the Crime & Society Research Group (VUB). She is directing several research projects mainly on youngsters’ in conflict with the law, deviance and social control. Her scientific expertise concerns young people, crime and justice.

Project Participant

Marijke Van Buggenhout is a member of the research group Crime & Society of the Criminology department. She graduated in 2015 with a Master’s degree in Criminology. She was awarded with the Jeanine Segers prize in criminology for her thesis entitled “Deconstructing the Social Concept of Street Children. The Durban Case”. She is currently working as a fulltime researcher in PRINTEGER.
